Majed bin Mohammed Al-Ansari, spokesperson for the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs and advisor to the Prime Minister’s Office, said on Tuesday that Qatar continues its efforts to bridge the gap between the United States and Iran by exchanging proposals aimed at narrowing the divide between the two sides. He noted that both parties have demonstrated commitment to the negotiation track and are reviewing the proposals put forward, despite the escalation in the region, according to the Qatar News Agency (QNA).
Speaking during the weekly media briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Al-Ansari said, “The Qatari delegation that traveled to Tehran on Monday arrived safely and held an extended meeting with their counterparts there, lasting about three hours. During the meeting, views were exchanged on various proposals currently being put forward to bridge the gap between the two sides, after which the delegation departed and returned to Doha yesterday evening.”
He added that “communications remain ongoing between the parties, and mediators continue to exchange proposals in real time, while both sides are currently reviewing the ideas and proposals presented by the mediators in various contexts.”
He pointed out that the continuation of negotiations and the parties’ commitment to engaging in them and studying the proposed proposals represents a “ray of hope” for reaching an agreement, stating in this regard, “A mediator cannot lose hope. There are developments in communications between the parties, but it is not possible at this time to speak of any specific development.”
Al-Ansari noted that these efforts are being carried out in full coordination with regional partners, particularly the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, given the strong consensus among GCC states on the necessity of sparing the region from escalation and working toward a de-escalation that prevents their peoples from facing any future tensions.
He reiterated the importance of ongoing Qatari-Pakistani mediation, emphasizing that it remains a priority for Qatar, and stressed that “any escalation in the coming phase will not be in the interest of any party.”
He highlighted the continued communication and coordination between Qatari officials and their counterparts in the region, as well as with partners in various countries around the world, with the aim of achieving de-escalation and resolving the crisis through diplomatic means.
Regarding the targeting of the Qatari gas tanker “Al-Mayah,” Al-Ansari confirmed that Qatar condemned the attack and stressed that freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the Arabian Gulf is a non-negotiable matter. He clarified that Qatar rejects any threat to freedom of navigation, whether directed at Qatari vessels or others in Gulf waters.
He said, “Any escalation witnessed in the region, whether through military attacks or targeting ships in Gulf waters, poses a threat to the entire region and endangers its peoples, and affects negotiations.”
On the situation in Yemen, Al-Ansari reiterated Qatar’s position supporting the legitimate Yemeni government and the Yemeni people in realizing their aspirations and emerging from the crisis. He noted that Qatar clearly condemned the attacks carried out by the Houthis against Saudi Arabia and affirmed its continued support for the Kingdom.
