Dr. Abdullah Al-Mutawa, Deputy Rector for Academic Support Services at Kuwait University, affirmed that the university is among the pioneers in applying artificial intelligence in higher education.
This statement came during his participation in a dialogue seminar titled “Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education,” held as part of the fifth UNESCO Conference on Higher Education in Arab Countries, which kicked off yesterday in Doha.
Al-Mutawa stated that true transformation lies not in the tools themselves, but in the governance of learning. He noted that the university is a leader in this field, having adopted a university-wide generative artificial intelligence policy in November 2024.
He clarified that the policy did not ban the use of such tools but rather established guidelines for their integration into coursework, requiring students to disclose the tools and prompts used. This ensures that artificial intelligence remains a supportive tool in scientific research, with its use declared and its outputs reviewed.
He further explained that the university began by establishing governance frameworks and training faculty members before adopting these tools, and subsequently provided 4,500 generative AI licenses for “Gemini,” along with AI agents for both students and faculty.
