A small Learjet crashed in a neighborhood in southern Florida on Sunday, killing all nine people on board, according to U.S. officials who said the plane had departed from Austin, Texas, bound for the Bahamas.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said in a statement that “the plane crash that occurred today in Palm Beach County, Florida, is a terrible tragedy.”
He noted that the aircraft, which had taken off from Austin for the Bahamas, crashed at 12:50 p.m. local time in Palm Beach County, where U.S. President Donald Trump owns his Mar-a-Lago resort.
He pointed out that the aircraft was a Learjet 60, a model designed for business travelers, and that it crashed in a residential area.
According to information provided by the local police department, the plane crashed just about 10 kilometers (6 miles) as the crow flies from Trump’s luxurious residence.
The U.S. president had left his residence on Sunday morning, heading to Iowa and Kansas to attend campaign rallies ahead of the midterm elections, which polls suggest his party is likely to face difficulties in.
