English club Aston Villa announced its intention to take legal action against former Liverpool defender and current football analyst Jamie Carragher, citing what the club described as “unacceptable insults” directed at the club and its supporters.
Carragher, a prominent analyst for Sky Sports and CBS, faced sharp criticism from Villa fans after suggesting that Spanish manager Unai Emery should be a candidate to succeed Michael Carrick, who is under increasing pressure, at Manchester United.
In a brief statement posted on the club’s social media accounts, Aston Villa chairman Nassef Sawiris said, “Aston Villa will take legal action against Jamie Carragher for his unacceptable insults to the club and its supporters,” adding, “Aston Villa will not allow anyone to hinder our rise in English and European football.”
Emery has dramatically transformed Aston Villa since taking charge four years ago. The Spanish manager led the Birmingham-based club to the Champions League twice and ended a 30-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League last season.
However, Emery has had to rebuild his squad this season after six key players from last year’s Europa League final departure during the transfer window, seeking either higher salaries or a better opportunity to compete regularly for titles. While he achieved success with Spanish clubs Valencia and Sevilla, he struggled under heightened expectations during his tenures at French side Paris Saint-Germain and English club Arsenal.
Speaking on the program “Stick to Football,” Carragher said, “He will certainly want the opportunity to return to managing a giant club. There is a hierarchy in football, whether you like it or not,” adding, “Aston Villa will never be Manchester United.”
