Araghchi’s response came on the “X” platform in reply to comments made by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during his visit to South Korea.
Merz stated that Germany has a strong economic interest in ending the conflict with Iran as soon as possible, noting that soaring energy prices have cost Europe alone more than 100 billion euros.
Writing on “X,” Araghchi said, “100 billion euros means nothing compared to the devastating blow that Iran’s powerful armed forces will deliver to those who dare to harm our people,” adding that red lines are a thing of the past.
The Iranian Foreign Minister also accused Merz of welcoming last year’s US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran, when he described them as “doing the dirty work on behalf of Europe.”
Merz had previously said in an interview with Germany’s second television channel, ZDF, on June 17, 2025, on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Canmore, Canada: “This is the dirty work that Israel is doing on behalf of all of us. We are also victims of this regime.”
Merz added, “I can only express my deep respect for the courage of the Israeli military and Israeli leadership in taking this step. Without it, we might have continued watching this regime’s terrorism for months or even years, and it might have done so while in possession of nuclear weapons.”
Merz’s remarks about “dirty work” sparked widespread criticism. The German Chancellor later said, “I described it that way, and it is not necessary to repeat it. It can be expressed in that way or another.”
