An Iraqi court sentenced three French nationals to 20 years in prison today, Thursday, for their affiliation with the Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria and Iraq.

According to the ruling by the judge of Baghdad’s Third Criminal Court (in the Karkh district), the sentence applies to Amir Abdelkader, known as Abu Bara’, a French national of Algerian origin born in 1989 in Lille; Kamal Habib Ahmed, a 42-year-old French national of Tunisian origin known as Abu Sumaya, a migrant; and Charlie Saint-Rémy, a 32-year-old French national of Vietnamese origin born in Paris and known as Abu Sufyan.

On Tuesday, the Third Criminal Court of Karkh had previously sentenced six other ISIS members holding French citizenship to 20 years in prison, with one receiving a 15-year term.

Since September 20, the court has been trying 47 ISIS members who hold French citizenship, according to a schedule set by the court.

Earlier this year, Iraqi authorities received approximately 5,064 ISIS members, including around 3,543 Syrians, 270 Iraqis, and about 2,000 individuals holding Arab, European, and Asian nationalities.
