Brazilian authorities have ordered an investigation into allegations that the campaign of the losing right-wing presidential candidate, Flavio Bolsonaro, received financial support from abroad.
According to the ruling signed by Federal Judge Flavio Dino, the probe will examine the Rock Bridge network and its connections with Brazilian businessmen. The network, which is based in the United States, was co-founded in 2019 by U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance.
The investigation aims to determine whether there is “a link between financial resources, services, or other economically measurable benefits and the electoral campaign.”
The Federal Judge also stated that it must be investigated whether internet companies engaged in “deliberate unequal treatment and algorithmic manipulation aimed at favoring certain candidates or harming others.”
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Bolsonaro’s rival who won the presidential election, accused Meta, the owner of Facebook, of handling his content in a manner that harmed him, an allegation the company denies.
Bolsonaro is currently in the United States, having left Brazil in a secret escape operation.
