The U.S. Department of State issued a joint statement signed by 30 other countries, underscoring the urgent need to address the “severe deterioration” in food security in Sudan amid the ongoing war in the country.
The conflict, which has been raging since April 2023 between the national army and the Rapid Support Forces, has killed more than 200,000 people and displaced over 13 million, triggering the world’s most severe hunger and displacement crisis.
The statement, published by the Agence France-Presse today, noted that “the risk of famine in the coming months, as warned by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, demands immediate action,” emphasizing that “there is no time to lose if we want to save lives and prevent famine.”
It further highlighted that more than 40 percent of the country’s population—approximately 19.5 million people—are experiencing acute food insecurity, with 5 million of them facing emergency-level conditions.
