Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is fighting to preserve his political standing ahead of Tuesday’s election, has urged U.S. President Donald Trump in recent days to show greater public support for his re-election campaign, according to Axios, citing a well-informed U.S. source and an Israeli source briefed on the developments.
The U.S. source stated that the White House views Netanyahu’s intense pressure as “a sign of desperation” and evidence that the Israeli prime minister is feeling the impact of declining poll numbers.
Neta Molloch, spokesperson for Netanyahu’s Likud party, denied that the prime minister had asked Trump to support his campaign “in recent days or before the issuance of his endorsement statement.”
The White House declined to comment on the matter. Two weeks ago, Trump stated in an interview with Newsmax that entities in Israel had asked him to intervene in support of Netanyahu.
