United fell behind just two minutes into the match, and the “Red Devils” were unable to regain control of the game, extending their winless streak to seven matches.
Fernandes, 32, told TNT Sports after another lackluster performance: “We started the match poorly, and they scored very early. There wasn’t enough pressure on the ball, nor were there good movements with it, and things didn’t go our way.” The Portuguese midfielder noted that the early goal scored by Argentine Nico Paz had a negative impact on the visiting side, making it difficult for them to impose their style of play.
Had Dutch substitute Joshua Zirkzee not equalized in stoppage time (90+1), United would have suffered their heaviest defeat in the history of their participation in the premier continental competition.
Fernandes added: “Conceding an early goal puts us in a defeated mindset from the start. It’s hard to break out of that state, to show courage, win possession, and create something.”
