Kuwait affirmed yesterday evening that the complete elimination of nuclear weapons constitutes the sole guarantee against their use, warning that the accumulation, development, and threat of use of such weapons undermine international security and place peoples under the threat of annihilation.
This statement was made in Kuwait’s address delivered by Diplomatic Attaché Jirah Al-Anzi before the First Committee (Disarmament and International Security) of the United Nations General Assembly during the discussion of the agenda item on “Nuclear Weapons.”
Kuwait also renewed its call on the international community to take serious steps to urge Israel, the occupying power, to join the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons as a non-nuclear-weapon state and to subject all its nuclear facilities and activities to comprehensive safeguards.
For its part, Kuwait emphasized the necessity of strengthening respect for international humanitarian law, ensuring the full and effective implementation of its rules and principles, protecting civilians and civilian objects during armed conflicts, and holding accountable those responsible for serious violations in accordance with international law.
This was stated in Kuwait’s address delivered by Diplomatic Attaché Mohammed Al-Mutairi before the Sixth Committee (Legal) of the United Nations General Assembly during the discussion of Agenda Item 81, titled “Additional Protocols.”
He affirmed that Kuwait attaches special importance to the issue of missing persons, drawing on its national experience regarding prisoners and the missing, and its commitment to continuing efforts to determine their fate and alleviate the suffering of their families.
On regional matters, Al-Mutairi condemned Iranian attacks on Kuwait, Gulf Cooperation Council countries, and Jordan, emphasizing that these attacks constitute a blatant violation of the principles and purposes of the UN Charter and international law, and contribute to expanding the conflict in the region.
He warned that targeting desalination plants threatens access to water, a fundamental element of life, and raises concerns about potential serious violations of the rules protecting civilian objects and those indispensable to the survival of the civilian population.
He also condemned the targeting of ships and tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, reaffirming the necessity of ensuring freedom of navigation and transit through the strait, and calling on Iran to comply with Security Council Resolution 2817 (2026), which was sponsored by 136 countries.
