US President Donald Trump expressed openness to holding a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss nuclear disarmament.
Trump told reporters on Monday, when asked about the possibility of such a summit, “We need this summit to talk about nuclear weapons and nuclear disarmament.”
He added that a summit among the leaders of the world’s three largest nuclear powers to discuss nuclear disarmament “would be very positive for the world,” noting that he is ready to participate in such a summit at any time.
He clarified that he would raise other issues, such as the war in Ukraine, during such a summit.
A meeting with Putin and Xi Jinping could take place next November on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit scheduled to be held in the Chinese city of Shenzhen.
The Washington Post reported that Putin was the one who proposed the idea.
China has not yet confirmed plans to hold such a meeting. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Tuesday, when asked about Trump’s remarks, that she had no information to share at this time.
