North Korean media reported on Tuesday that leader Kim Jong-un visited an exhibition of clothing and footwear, highlighting achievements in the light industry sector as part of his regional development policy.
Kim toured the 2026 National Clothing and Footwear Exhibition the previous day, expressing satisfaction that the displayed products demonstrated “rapid and significant” progress in light industry, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
According to the report, the exhibition featured more than 70,700 pieces of clothing from over 30 types and more than 170,000 pairs of shoes from over 60 types, all produced in light industry factories across the country under the regional development policy.
KCNA quoted Kim as saying, “This is clear proof of the correctness and vitality of the Party’s policy aimed at eliminating disparities between central and local areas, as well as between urban and rural regions, and achieving simultaneous and balanced development of the entire country.”
In 2024, Kim unveiled a policy to build modern factories in 20 cities and towns annually over a 10-year period to improve living conditions for residents in regional areas.
Kim’s appearance comes amid unverified rumors about his deteriorating health. British media reported that he was urgently transferred to a hospital in Beijing, citing claims by a Chinese activist that he suffered a brain hemorrhage, fell into a coma, and was later declared dead, with his body secretly returned to North Korea.
These allegations also included claims that Beijing sent approximately 9,000 soldiers to Pyongyang to ensure a smooth succession to his daughter, Kim Ju-ae, without triggering a civil war. No reliable information in the text confirms the validity of these claims.
