A raid on the Washington, D.C., home of U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar yielded DNA evidence, along with her personal passport, as part of an investigation into alleged immigration fraud.

Federal authorities seized Omar’s phone during the search and issued more than 12 subpoenas to a grand jury, some of which targeted her relatives.

Agents denied reports that they had rummaged through trash in search of evidence during the investigation, but it remained unclear how they obtained her DNA.

However, the New York Post quoted a source as saying the DNA provided crucial evidence supporting claims that Omar entered into a sham marriage with her brother to secure a green card, which grants permanent residency in the United States.

Several sources said the evidence provided prosecutors with grounds to bring federal charges against Omar related to immigration fraud.

No criminal charges have been filed against Omar, 44, who strongly denies any wrongdoing and maintains that she is the target of a politically motivated campaign of harassment.

Tom Homan, the border security chief in the administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump, warned that Omar’s U.S. citizenship could be revoked and she could be deported if federal investigators found evidence of immigration fraud.

In an interview with Fox News, Homan said investigators had assembled a “strong case” against the Somali-born congresswoman.

When asked directly whether the investigation could lead to the loss of her citizenship and deportation, he confirmed that such an outcome was possible.

He added, “We’ve done it before. It’s a long, arduous process, but it has happened in the past.”

Homan continued, “I’ve been involved in these kinds of investigations before, and certainly, if the evidence points to it, yes, it can happen.”

Homan’s warnings came as former U.S. President Barack Obama mounted a notable defense of the Somali-born congresswoman, accusing the Trump administration of weaponizing the federal government to target one of the president’s most prominent critics.

The escalation followed an FBI raid on Omar’s Washington residence last Monday, during which agents seized her phone as part of an investigation into allegations concerning her family’s immigration documents.

Speaking to Fox News on Saturday, Obama said, “I’ve been told we have a strong case. We’ll let the evidence lead us to what it reveals. And she will be treated under the same standards that you and I are. If she broke the law, she will be held accountable.”

He said, “Deterrence is part of what this administration is doing,” referring to efforts to review refugee files and pursue denaturalization cases.

However, when asked whether federal authorities were investigating Omar for potential violations beyond immigration fraud, he declined to elaborate, saying, “I’m not going to go into that.”

On Sunday, the former president posted a statement on the X platform condemning the investigation and accusing Trump of attempting to intimidate an elected official for exercising her right to criticize the White House.

He added, “But that is exactly what the Trump administration is doing to Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.”

Obama said the investigation appeared to be based on a dispute over Omar’s age when her father obtained U.S. citizenship.

According to the former president, Omar arrived in the United States at age 12 and automatically became a citizen five years later when her father was naturalized.

He claimed that investigators were advancing the theory that she was actually 18 at the time, which could undermine her legal status as a U.S. citizen.

Obama wrote, “Think about it. The federal government is bringing its full force against an elected official who is committed to the law, simply because she dared to criticize the president.”

He added, “Any president or administration’s willingness to engage in such obvious attempts at intimidation should outrage all Americans, regardless of their political views regarding Representative Ilhan Omar.”

Her legal team demanded the immediate return of property seized during the raid, accusing the Department of Justice of conducting an unlawful investigation driven by political motives.

They also accused federal authorities of ignoring established Department of Justice practices designed to prevent investigative actions from influencing elections.

The lawyers wrote that “this retaliatory, vindictive, and politically motivated criminal investigation, targeting one of the president’s most prominent critics in Congress, violates Representative Omar’s constitutional rights and threatens the principle of separation of powers.”

She stated, “Our lawyers and our law enforcement partners have complied with all court orders and legal obligations, as they always do.”

Trump had previously denied any role in the investigation, telling reporters after the raid, “I think she’s a very bad person, but it’s really up to the Department of Justice.”
