French President Emmanuel Macron said that protests could be banned if necessary, following violent riots that have shaken France.
In a televised address on Sunday evening, Macron said: “Given the current situation, prefects will make decisions in coordination with mayors to protect our cities, public buildings, and shops, and where necessary, they will go as far as banning certain gatherings and taking all necessary measures.”
Macron stated that police conduct is also under scrutiny, and he has asked the interior minister to review the matter.
More than half a million people demonstrated across France on Saturday in a nationwide protest against the rising cost of living. Looting, arson, and property damage occurred in numerous cities, as masked rioters attacked town halls, police stations, and other government buildings.
Macron said: “Yesterday, despite their professionalism, our law enforcement officers faced unprecedented violence in many cities.”
He added: “I have repeatedly asked the government to draw every lesson from this incident regarding investigations and preparedness, and to ensure that such events do not happen again. I expect clear answers, and there will be full transparency.”
He further stated: “Whoever destroys something must pay for it. Whoever loots something will be required to compensate and cover the damages, and whoever seeks to overthrow the Republic will be held accountable.”
