French President Emmanuel Macron said after the riots in France: “We all feel anger and shame tonight,” adding that “nothing justifies violence” during Saturday’s protests in France.
Macron stressed accountability for those who “destroyed and looted” during the protests, pledging full transparency regarding the security strategy.
He called for a distinction between the “legitimate demands” of the protesters and the “perpetrators of looting,” noting that discussions about the upcoming elections are conducted “with political parties, not through street violence.”
For its part, the French Ministry of the Interior stated that 2,397 people had been arrested and 997 security personnel injured as a result of the violence across the country.
