Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian denied on Friday, during talks with the Prime Minister of Georgia, that Tehran is seeking to acquire nuclear weapons, and expressed his readiness for dialogue while condemning U.S. sanctions.
In his meeting with Irakli Kobakhidze, Pezeshkian also called for strengthening ties with Georgia, following weeks after Tbilisi suspended air links between the two countries in response to U.S. sanctions on Iranian airlines.
According to a statement issued by his office, Pezeshkian said, “Iran is not seeking to possess nuclear weapons.”
Pezeshkian also urged Kobakhidze, during their meeting, to establish a clear timeline for expanding cooperation between Tehran and Tbilisi, as reported by the Iranian Tasnim News Agency.
Tasnim quoted Kobakhidze as saying he opposes foreign interference in the internal affairs of neighboring countries, although his office did not mention these remarks in its statement regarding the meeting.
The Georgian Civil Aviation Agency announced in September that it would comply with U.S. sanctions, while Kobakhidze affirmed that Tbilisi is not imposing unilateral sanctions on Tehran.
