Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveiled a car he described as a “flying car,” equipped with a propulsion system that enables it to lift off the ground, during a live-streamed event held at a SpaceX facility.
Musk revealed the new Roadster sports car at an event held at a SpaceX rocket testing facility in Texas, United States.
During a live presentation streamed via Tesla’s X account, the car sped down a steep ramp before landing on its wheels.
“Flying cars are a reality,” Musk said during the event, adding that success was “not guaranteed” but predicting that it would “most likely succeed.”
The tech billionaire described the innovation as the result of “the collaboration between the world’s best car company and the world’s best rocket company,” referring to Tesla and SpaceX.
He said production of the car would begin in 2028.
American aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss unveiled the first prototype of a flying car in 1917.
However, the development of practical designs only began to receive serious attention in recent years, driven by advances in electric motor technology and high-performance batteries.
