Sources in the maritime security sector said on Wednesday that a container ship sank near the Strait of Hormuz after being hit by a projectile. It was also reported that another dry bulk cargo vessel was sinking following damage sustained in a previous attack.

Contact with the ship’s operator, UAE-based GFS Ship Management FZE, could not be immediately established for comment.

Data from the United Nations International Maritime Organization showed that GFS Pride is the second ship to sink since the start of the US war on Iran on February 28.

In a separate incident, sources reported that another vessel, the Cape Daw, flying the flag of Antigua and Barbuda, was sinking near the strait after being hit by a projectile on September 23.

Contact with the operator of this vessel, also based in the UAE, could not be immediately established for comment.

The UK-based maritime risk management group Vanguard said in a note issued on Wednesday that the dry bulk carrier Cape Daw, flying the flag of Antigua and Barbuda and attacked on September 23, was sinking after a salvage attempt failed.

In a related development, two senior Iranian officials told Reuters that Iran is using new tactics to target ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz in an effort to keep oil prices high and influence the US midterm congressional elections.
