US President Donald Trump accused Yemen’s Houthi militants on Tuesday of attempting to deliberately drive up oil prices ahead of the midterm congressional elections, warning them that he would never forget their attacks on Saudi Arabia amid an escalating regional conflict fueled by the US war on Iran.
Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, “The Houthis are behaving very badly,” accusing them of resuming attacks under Iranian instigation following a relative lull after US strikes in Yemen last year.
Trump also clarified that his warning would extend beyond the November 3 midterm elections, stating, “I will be present after the elections, and I will never forget it!”
The warning came after a series of Houthi attacks on areas in Saudi Arabia, including King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. The attack killed at least 13 people, injured more than 300, and forced the airport to close.
Earlier on Tuesday, Trump told reporters that he “might” ask Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to intervene and support Saudi interests.
The Iran-aligned Houthis have been engaged in a conflict against the Saudi-backed Yemeni government since 2014, but the intensity of the dispute has escalated since the United States began its ongoing eight-month war on Iran.
The group, which controls large swathes of Yemen, has recently intensified its attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea and the vital Bab al-Mandab strait.
