U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle resigned on Tuesday amid allegations of misconduct, but she insisted she would defend herself “vigorously.”
The Trump administration said earlier on Tuesday that it had asked Guilfoyle to leave her post after she faced intense criticism over allegations that she engaged in misconduct and possibly illegal activity before and during her tenure in Athens.
The announcement came days after comments and speculation, following a question posed to White House Press Secretary Katie Ziegler at her first briefing on Tuesday morning. Ziegler said Guilfoyle “was a tremendous asset to the team, and we wish her well.”
Guilfoyle’s departure request followed the possibility of it being raised with The Associated Press on Sunday and President Donald Trump’s expression of dissatisfaction with reports concerning Guilfoyle’s alleged behavior on Monday.
Trump told reporters at the White House when asked whether he was considering firing Guilfoyle: “Well, we’re looking into it. We’re not happy.”
Those comments came a day after an AP report, citing a senior U.S. official, stating that Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were “very angry” about the reported behavior of Guilfoyle and would likely decide her fate this week.
In a series of media reports dating back to late last month, The Wall Street Journal published stories about questionable behavior by Guilfoyle, including allegedly threatening an official of the host country, accepting inappropriate gifts and benefits, and offering to leverage her influence within the administration in exchange for having a large credit card bill paid.
Guilfoyle addressed the allegations directly in a post on the platform X, saying: “These allegations are false, and I intend to vigorously defend my name, reputation, and integrity.”
She added: “I have dedicated my professional life to fighting for justice, defending what is right, and upholding the values that make America exceptional. I will not allow false allegations to define decades of my public service.”
In a statement issued on Sunday night, Guilfoyle’s lawyers denied that she committed any violations, claiming that the funds she had sought from one of Trump’s donors were owed for services—media appearances and speaking engagements preceding her nomination as ambassador—that had not been paid.
