Aramco CEO: Targeting Regional Energy Infrastructure Threatens Global Economies

Amin Nasser, President and Chief Executive Officer of Saudi Aramco, warned that the repercussions of attacks on the region’s energy infrastructure extend beyond its own markets to economies and markets worldwide, emphasizing that protecting energy facilities and supply routes requires international cooperation amid the challenges to global energy security posed by recent disruptions.

Speaking at the World Petroleum Congress in Riyadh, Nasser said that disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and attacks on regional energy infrastructure have revealed the extent of interconnection among global supply chain links. He noted that ongoing disruptions are exacerbating pressures on crude oil and refined product markets, particularly diesel.

He added that available commercial inventories now offer only a limited buffer to absorb shocks, cautioning against relying on them as a permanent solution for energy security. He stressed that restoring supply flows through the Strait of Hormuz and restoring market confidence remain essential factors in alleviating pressure on the energy supply chain.

Nasser affirmed that resilience in the energy sector is not achieved through a single pipeline, facility, or technology, but rather through an integrated system encompassing infrastructure, spare production capacity, diversified export routes, and the financial and human resources needed to sustain operations and investment during crises.

He emphasized that the costs of investments required to build resilience are borne by the implementing entities, while the benefits extend to economies, consumers, companies, and investors. He pointed out that avoiding disruptions represents an economic value that deserves greater recognition, thereby supporting the sustainability of investments essential for energy security.
