Microsoft CEO: Washing Machines and Milk Cartons Face Stricter Oversight Than AI Systems

Microsoft President Brad Smith has called for the establishment of binding global safety standards for artificial intelligence, warning that the development of autonomous systems necessitates stricter oversight amid concerns over the risk of losing control and threats to cybersecurity.

In an interview with the BBC, Smith noted that washing machines and milk cartons are subject to more stringent safety and inspection requirements than AI systems currently are, urging the immediate implementation of regulatory controls for the sector.

He proposed mandating that companies report incidents and notify affected parties when AI systems go out of control, alongside providing emergency mechanisms to halt or slow down these systems, and requiring independent assessments of new technologies before their deployment.

Microsoft’s stance reflects a broadening debate on shifting from voluntary commitments to enforceable legal rules, particularly as the use of AI agents expands.
