Poland: Plot to Assassinate Prime Minister and Defense Minister

Amid sharp political polarization and security threats stemming from the war in Ukraine and Moscow’s escalation of its hybrid war against countries supporting Kyiv, Poland, a member of NATO and the European Union, has taken special measures to address information regarding a possible assassination attempt on Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.
Carolina Galićka, a spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior, stated that the ministry had issued directives to authorities to take action “based on information received by the police regarding a potential assassination attempt on the Prime Minister (...) as well as the Deputy Prime Minister,” who also holds the defense portfolio.
Representatives from the police, the State Protection Agency (ABW), and the Internal Security Agency (AIS) participated in the meeting held today. Jacek Dobrzyński, spokesperson for the Minister for Coordination of Special Security Services in Poland, told journalists after the meeting, “We are treating this matter with the utmost seriousness.”
He added, “Month after month, and year after year, the police, the State Protection Agency, and security agencies receive more threats and messages containing various threats targeting Poland and Poles.” He continued, “In this case, we are talking about a high probability that these threats will indeed be carried out.” He noted that the information about the threat was first received by the State Protection Agency, which passed it on to the police. No further details about the reported conspiracy were disclosed.
It is worth noting that in September, Tusk warned of potential intense hybrid attacks by Russia on NATO’s eastern border.
Polish authorities were placed on maximum alert this week following three stabbing attacks targeting schools within four days in the Masovian region, central Poland, where the capital Warsaw is located. Tusk condemned these attacks, describing them as part of a “culture of violence.”
In August, police detained a 23-year-old man on suspicion of calling for the assassination of senior politicians. Tusk stated in 2024 that he had received threats following the assassination attempt on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.
