Iraq’s National Security Advisor said on Wednesday that Iraq had rejected a Syrian request to repatriate thousands of individuals suspected of belonging to the Islamic State (ISIS), who had been transferred from Syrian detention centers to Iraqi authorities earlier this year.
Aboudi noted that Syria had asked for the handover of 4,000 Syrian detainees for trial in Syria, but Iraq refused.
He told The Associated Press that Iraq had returned to Syria around 50 Syrian detainees who were found not to be members of ISIS, while approximately 4,000 Syrian detainees believed to be prominent members of the extremist group remain in Iraq.
He added, “Iraq is conducting investigations, and anyone proven to have committed crimes will be tried in Iraq under Iraqi law.”
Syria did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
