The U.S. State Department announced on Monday its approval of a $400 million deal with Kuwait, which includes repair services and the return of Patriot missiles to active service. These missiles played a key role in countering Iranian attacks in the region.

In a statement, the department said, “Kuwait will use these enhanced capabilities to strengthen its territorial defense operations,” adding that it “will face no difficulty in integrating these systems and services into its armed forces.”

On the same day, the United States also approved a $1 billion deal to sell the United Arab Emirates up to 10,000 guidance units for the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS).

The U.S. State Department stated in a release that “the proposed deal will enhance the UAE’s ability to address current and future threats by developing and maintaining robust self-defense capabilities, as well as improving interoperability with U.S. forces.”

The APKWS system converts unguided missiles into precision-guided munitions that can be used for purposes including shooting down drones, thereby avoiding the need to expend costly missiles against much cheaper aerial targets.

The UAE and other Gulf states allied with the United States have suffered severe strikes amid the conflict with Iran, with Tehran repeatedly targeting them with drones and missiles.
