Nigerian authorities said a military aircraft crashed in the southern part of the country with 25 passengers and seven crew members on board, adding that a search and rescue operation was underway. No reports had yet emerged on whether the incident resulted in casualties.
Nigerian Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo said in a statement that the plane was on a routine flight to Lagos, the country’s economic capital, when it went down in the Egbokuda area of Ondo State.
The Nigerian Air Force stated that the aircraft was an ATR-42 and confirmed that it had immediately launched a search and rescue mission. The extent of the damage to the plane was not immediately clear.
Keyamo said the aircraft disappeared from radar screens at around 9 a.m. local time, noting that it was later determined to have crashed midway between Edo State and Lagos.
