Spanish Prime Minister Dissolves Parliament, Calls for Early Elections

The Socialist Prime Minister, in a speech delivered from the Moncloa Palace, said, “In order to carry out the deep-seated reforms we need… we must mobilize our energies… and secure a much larger, progressive majority that will enable us to break the hold of the elites, win new social gains, and continue transforming Spain.”

He added, “I have decided, since this morning, to call for an emergency cabinet meeting to dissolve both chambers of parliament and to call for legislative elections to be held on Sunday, November 29.”

On Friday, parliament rejected two bills introduced by the government in an attempt to contain the housing crisis, dealing a major blow to Sánchez and reigniting doubts about the ability of his minority government to survive in parliament until the legislative elections originally scheduled for mid-2027.

The crisis began about ten days ago with the eviction of an elderly woman from her home in the capital, turning her into a symbol of a problem that Spain has been grappling with for years.
