Escalation of Indian Opposition Protests Against Kumar

Protests demanding the dismissal of India’s Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, and a halt to a controversial reform of voter rolls, are escalating ahead of important elections in several states.

Supporters of opposition parties and student-led groups took to the streets across India early this week, particularly in Mumbai and New Delhi, to intensify their campaign against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and against the intensive Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, according to Bloomberg News.

Security measures have been tightened in central New Delhi due to the protests, with police setting up roadblocks around the Jantar Mantar area.
