The Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) held its 33rd Coordination Meeting of Environment and Climate Change Experts for Member States, both in person and via video conferencing, at the Permanent Headquarters of Arab Organizations in Kuwait on Sunday.
In a press release, OAPEC stated that the meeting aligns with the organization’s commitment to monitoring environmental issues and climate change, and their impact on the energy sector and sustainable development in Arab countries.
It emphasized that the meeting seeks to enhance coordination and cooperation among member states at international climate forums, exchange expertise, and build common Arab positions on environmental issues of shared concern.
OAPEC added that Secretary-General Engineer Khaled Al-Otaibi opened the meeting, which aims to follow up on the latest developments in negotiations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement, strengthen Arab coordination, and exchange perspectives on issues on the international climate action agenda in preparation for the 31st Conference of the Parties (COP31) to the Convention.
It noted that discussions covered developments in the implementation of the Framework Convention, as well as the positions of countries and negotiating groups on various related issues, alongside an overview of potential scenarios for the climate negotiation process in the coming period, contributing to supporting Arab positions and enhancing the effectiveness of their participation in international climate forums.
It was reported that the Turkish city of Antalya will host COP31 from November 9 to 20 next year, with broad international participation to explore ways to implement climate targets, promote innovation and partnerships, and support practical solutions to address climate change challenges.
The meeting was attended by representatives of member states, as well as representatives from the Secretariat-General of the Arab League, the Secretariat-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, and the head of the Arab negotiating team from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
