Agger Calls for Sale of Manchester City

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has called on Manchester City’s owners to sell the club following its conviction for breaching English Premier League financial rules, arguing that all officials implicated in the case should step down, as the club intends to appeal the ruling.

Amid investigations by the English Premier League, an independent panel concluded that Manchester City “clearly and deliberately” circumvented league regulations by inflating revenues and concealing costs through a series of “sham” commercial deals over nine seasons.

Writing in Britain’s Daily Telegraph today, Carragher stated: “The club cannot recover from the stain of its conviction unless those responsible for its management realize they have failed in their duties and sell the club.”

He added: “There is no way to whitewash this. The scale of institutional cheating and the lack of cooperation with the investigation render the position of all implicated City officials untenable. Continuing the fight will only prolong the suffering of fans who mistakenly believe the club is innocent.”
