The Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) at Adan Hospital has been awarded the Silver Star classification by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) under the “Capture the Fracture” program, marking a first-of-its-kind achievement in Kuwait.

Dr. Shaima Ahmed Al-Anazi, an endocrinology and diabetes consultant at Adan Hospital, member of the Kuwait Osteoporosis Association, and head of the hospital’s Fracture Liaison Service unit, stated that this achievement represents the first accreditation of an FLS program in Kuwait, and the second FLS program in the Gulf region to attain the “Silver Star” level, according to records held by the International Osteoporosis Foundation.

In an interview with Al-Jarida, Dr. Al-Anazi explained that since its launch about a year ago, the unit has reviewed approximately 230 patients, including 186 patients who had suffered fractures, while the remaining cases involved patients with osteoporosis.

She noted that most patients seen by the unit are women, particularly given the increased risk of osteoporosis after menopause. She also pointed out that Kuwait is witnessing a noticeable rise in the rates of diabetes, vitamin D deficiency, and obesity, which are among the risk factors that can increase the incidence of osteoporosis.
