Rural Woman Foils Attack on US Fairford Military Base in Britain

A WhatsApp message sent to a neighborhood group at 1:49 a.m. might seem insignificant, but the message that arrived in a small village next to the US military base at RAF Fairford in Britain was anything but.

A woman in her fifties sent a message to her neighbors on the WhatsApp group saying: “If anyone is awake… something strange is happening in the village… I saw three vans blocking the village road. A group of masked individuals wearing uniforms got out… and I have informed the police.”

In the morning, the Counter-Terrorism Command announced that it had arrested five individuals after responding to the report, all of them British nationals from London in their twenties.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham said he would chair a COBRA committee meeting in the wake of the incident—COBRA being the briefing room of the UK Prime Minister’s Office—where the high-level government committee convenes to discuss rapid responses to major events or those involving British citizens, “to ensure we have not overlooked anything regarding the incident.”

This came after UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting stated that “the woman’s report of the incident was incomplete and insufficient when she contacted emergency services in the early hours.”

This sparked controversy with the woman, who responded to the Defence Secretary’s remarks by saying: “No official was available to speak with in the early hours.” She added, “I was not a nosy neighbor interfering in her neighbors’ affairs at dawn. I simply want the authorities to acknowledge their failure.” She continued, “Who would have thought that a rural woman would roll up her sleeves and get the job done… I did my duty and reported it to the authorities.”

The woman criticized politicians, saying: “I know that those at the highest levels said my report was incomplete and insufficient. My report was simply that three strange vehicles were parked in our village and a group of strangers got out and were wandering around the area. That was my report, and I don’t know how they knew it was insufficient. I never met them, nor did any official at any level contact me or anyone in the village.”

It is worth noting that the woman was returning to her farm after dropping off one of her workers at her home in the early hours when she saw the three vehicles blocking the road. She said she initially thought the vehicles belonged to the secret police, and one of her companions got out to look inside the vehicles but found no one inside. They called the number written on the vehicle, hoping the owner would come to move it from the road, but no one answered. Shortly after, they saw several masked individuals wandering around.

The woman said: “They passed us like lightning… there were between eight and ten of them, and they were wearing what appeared to be a uniform.” She realized that this was not what secret police officers wear, nor was it their modus operandi.

She continued: “I tried calling the Ministry of Defence number, as we usually do in case of need, but the phone rang… and rang… and rang… and no one answered.” She then tried calling the non-emergency police number 101 and received no response, so she decided the matter was serious and she should call the emergency number 999.

After my call, “within five minutes, the rapid response began. Armed forces arrived and arrested the masked individuals, and there was a helicopter in the air searching for more of them in the area.”

“The strange thing is that none of them ever contacted me again, even though my number is in their possession. They didn’t even inform anyone in the village about what was happening. At 6 a.m., they suddenly decided to evacuate the village, while the three vehicles were still blocking the road, and they did nothing about them.”

The woman received no notice or recognition from officials, but she has become the heroine of the local village, from which 80 families were evacuated and who are still unable to return to their homes.

It is worth noting that the police said they arrested five people in the incident, while the woman said she saw between eight and ten individuals.
