Yemeni Parliament Approves General Mobilization Declaration to Counter Houthi Escalation

The Yemeni House of Representatives approved on Monday the request of Rashad al-Alimi, Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council, to declare a general mobilization to confront the escalation by the Houthi militia, protect citizens, defend the republican system and constitutional legitimacy, and safeguard the state’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The state-run Yemeni News Agency (SABA) reported that the decision was made during an expanded session of the Council held via video conference, chaired by Council Chairman Sultan al-Barakani, to discuss al-Alimi’s memorandum. Al-Alimi, who also serves as the Supreme Commander of the Yemeni Armed Forces, sought approval for the general mobilization to counter the Houthi escalation, protect citizens, defend the republican system and constitutional legitimacy, and preserve the state’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, given the national and constitutional responsibilities imposed by the current phase.

The Council emphasized that the approval of the general mobilization comes amid the dangers facing the country due to the war waged by the Houthi militias, which pose threats to the lives, security, and stability of citizens, as well as to the unity of the country and its republican system.

Earlier, on Thursday evening, on the eve of the 64th anniversary of the September 26 Revolution, Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad al-Alimi called in a speech for a general mobilization and national alert to confront the Houthi militia. He also announced a general amnesty for anyone who chooses to abandon the Houthi militias, cease fighting in their ranks, or work on their behalf.
