US House Democrats plan extensive oversight of Trump administration

House Democrats are preparing a broad oversight agenda, including investigations into U.S. President Donald Trump, his family, and his administration, if the party gains control of the chamber from Republicans in November’s elections.

This task is highly challenging, requiring coordination among multiple congressional committees. A Democratic majority would grant the controlling party exceptional advantages, including larger budgets and larger staffs, as well as investigative powers and the authority to issue subpoenas to confront what Democrats view as widespread corruption and abuse of power. The option of impeaching the Republican president and members of his administration also remains on the table.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York, who is expected to become Speaker of the House if Democrats win control of the Capitol, said, “There is a cost borne by the American people due to unchecked corruption.”

Jeffries added, “If there are those who steal from the American people, shortchange them, deceive them, or harm their interests, we will hold those fraudsters accountable.”

Congress possesses significant power to oversee the executive branch as part of its role as a co-equal branch of government, and a roadmap for Democratic-led investigations has already been laid out through nearly daily letters sent by lawmakers to the administration and through memos filed in court.
