London Foils Terror Plot Against Air Base

London police announced yesterday the arrest of five people suspected of plotting a “terrorist attack,” following a “major incident” that occurred over the weekend between Saturday and Sunday near RAF Fairford, a military base used by the US Air Force in Gloucestershire, western England.

For its part, Gloucestershire Police said in a statement that military bomb disposal experts are “currently examining several vehicles” near the Royal Air Force base.

Police reported that many homes in the nearby village of Wilford were evacuated, with residents relocated to a nearby leisure center, according to the BBC.

The Telegraph reported that the suspects attempted to use a car bomb, revealing that three trucks suspected of containing explosives, which the defendants tried to use, were seized.

The newspaper quoted British security sources as saying police are investigating the possibility of Iranian links to a plot to bomb the base, which hosts US strategic bombers, including B-52s and B-2s.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard had previously threatened London, stating that any base used in strikes against Iran would be a “legitimate target.”

The US Air Force said in a statement that the incident did not involve any of its personnel, affirming its “close coordination with our British partners to ensure the safety of our troops and the public.”

Last March, former Prime Minister Keir Starmer authorized Washington to carry out “defensive” operations against Iranian missile sites from two British bases, including Fairford.

This incident comes amid growing concerns about foreign activities on British soil, while British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has accused Iran and Russia of recruiting individuals to carry out criminal operations in the United Kingdom.

The Ministry of Defense provided no information on the origin of these drones, but these incidents occurred as European countries condemn the increasing multi-vector attacks on their territories, which they attribute to Russia.
