First historic meeting between the foreign ministers of Kuwait and El Salvador since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1999
In the first official bilateral meeting between the Foreign Ministers of Kuwait and El Salvador since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1999, Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Jeraf Al-Jaber met with Salvadoran Foreign Minister Alexandra Hill Tinoco. The Embassy of El Salvador in Kuwait described this milestone as "historic and significant in the trajectory of bilateral relations, and one that will inject new momentum into political dialogue and cooperation between the two countries."
In a statement issued on Friday evening, a copy of which was obtained by Al-Jarida, the embassy affirmed that the meeting, held on the sidelines of the High-Level Week of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, marks a new chapter in Kuwaiti-Salvadoran relations. It also reflects Kuwait’s growing engagement with Central American and Latin American countries, and opens the door to expanding areas of cooperation between the two nations.
The embassy noted that Kuwait and El Salvador established diplomatic relations on December 9, 1999, initiating a journey of friendship, cooperation, and mutual respect that has lasted for more than 26 years. It pointed out that El Salvador strengthened its diplomatic presence in Kuwait by opening its resident embassy in November 2024, headed by Ambassador Juan Carlos Staben Poyat.
It also highlighted that cooperation between El Salvador and the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development (Kuwaiti Fund for Arab Economic Development) has entered a new phase with the signing of the first loan agreement between the two sides, considering this step a foundation for a long-term development partnership.
In the same context, the embassy confirmed that El Salvador is experiencing notable growth in the tourism sector, citing data from the "Global Tourism Barometer" published by the United Nations World Tourism Organization in September 2026. The data showed a 37 percent increase in the number of international tourists visiting the country during the first half of the year, compared to the same period in 2025.
The embassy affirmed that the development of relations between Kuwait and El Salvador reflects a shared desire to transform more than two decades of friendship into a broader partnership, based on enhancing political dialogue, development cooperation, trade, and investment, as well as strengthening ties between the peoples of the two countries.
