Pezeshkian: We welcome Chinese President Xi's support for returning to the Islamabad Memorandum

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Friday that his country wants to return to the memorandum of understanding signed with Washington in June, days after stating that Iran “will not submit” to the United States.

He praised China’s willingness to revive the memorandum, writing in a post on X that “Iran shares this approach and emphasizes the need to return to that understanding.”

Diplomatic efforts have so far failed to end the conflict in the Middle East, which erupted in late February.

The agreement reached in June aimed to lay the foundations for a comprehensive peace deal, but the ceasefire quickly collapsed.

Optimism rose with the convening of the United Nations General Assembly in New York this week. However, the Iranian president reaffirmed in his address to the UN body on Wednesday that his country “will not submit” to the United States.

The following day, he told Fox News, “We do not want to continue. It is America that must decide whether it wants to end this matter or not.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi participated in a meeting with Trump envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meetings in New York, but their talks did not yield any breakthrough.
