Colombia Severs Diplomatic Relations with Iran

The ministry clarified that the decision is based on Colombian foreign policy principles concerning national security, the security of the Western Hemisphere, and the fight against transnational crime, in light of allegations of ties between Tehran and international terrorist groups and other organizations linked to “drug terrorism,” which Colombia considers a security threat.

The statement said that these developments “have undermined Colombia’s confidence in the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” emphasizing that the severance of diplomatic relations does not extend to consular relations, in accordance with the Vienna Conventions on Diplomatic and Consular Relations.
