Kuwait calls for reform of the international financial system
Kuwait, represented by Assistant Undersecretary of State for International Organizations Affairs Ambassador Sadiq Ma’arfi, participated yesterday evening in a ministerial meeting titled “Enhancing Cooperation to Achieve Maritime Security and Stability,” held at the United Nations headquarters in New York on the sidelines of the high-level week of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. The meeting was organized at the joint invitation of Canada, Estonia, Japan, the Netherlands, the Philippines, and the European Union, with the participation of several foreign ministers, senior officials, and representatives of countries and international organizations.
The meeting focused on strengthening international cooperation to ensure the security and stability of vital sea lanes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, the Bab al-Mandab Strait, and the Red Sea, as well as the importance of safeguarding freedom of maritime navigation and maintaining the flow of international trade, energy supplies, and global supply chains.
In another matter, Ambassador Ma’arfi emphasized the importance of continuing efforts to reform the international financial and economic system to make it fairer, more equitable, and more responsive to the needs of developing countries, thereby enhancing opportunities for trade and investment, eradicating poverty, and achieving sustainable development.
This was stated in Kuwait’s address delivered by Ambassador Ma’arfi during the high-level meeting commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Declaration on the Right to Development, held at the UN headquarters in New York. The meeting addressed ways to bridge development gaps, strengthen international partnerships, and leverage the role of national policies and multilateral cooperation in creating the necessary conditions for the realization of the right to development, alongside the importance of ensuring that all countries and peoples benefit from development opportunities and economic and technological transformations.
Ambassador Ma’arfi also held discussions with Alexander Zhyvotov, Acting Under-Secretary-General for Counter-Terrorism at the United Nations, on areas of cooperation between Kuwait and the UN in counter-terrorism and ways to enhance them.
On another front, Assistant Undersecretary of State for Gulf Cooperation Council Affairs Ambassador Hamad Al-Murri participated yesterday in the joint ministerial meeting between the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), held on the sidelines of the high-level week of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. The meeting discussed follow-up on the outcomes of the second summit between the two sides and ways to enhance and develop joint cooperation opportunities across various fields, as well as examining several regional and international issues and developments of common interest.
