Minister of Education, Eng. Sayed Jalal Al-Tabtabaee, received the board of directors of the Kuwaiti Writers Association, in the presence of several ministry officials. The Association presented a proposal for an annual national free-reading program, initially titled “Kuwait Reader,” aimed at fostering reading among school students and establishing it as a daily habit and an integral part of their educational experience.
During the meeting, the General Secretary outlined the project’s key pillars and implementation mechanisms, including activating a reading period in school libraries, providing books suitable for the ages and interests of primary, middle, and secondary school students, and launching a competitive pathway that progresses from the school level to the educational zone level, culminating in national finals. Evaluation will be based on comprehension, expression skills, and the ability to articulate opinions, rather than solely on the number of books read.
Attendees also discussed ways to enhance cooperation between the Ministry of Education and the Kuwaiti Writers Association, leveraging the expertise of both parties in selecting books, preparing accompanying programs and activities, and creating a school environment that makes books accessible to students, thereby transforming reading from an academic obligation into a beloved and sustainable practice.
The project received considerable attention and positive engagement from the Minister and ministry officials, resonating well due to its educational and cultural objectives, which contribute to strengthening students’ connection with books and enhancing their abilities in comprehension, critical thinking, and expression.
The Kuwaiti Writers Association emphasized that the project stems from its cultural responsibility and its conviction that instilling the habit of reading at an early age represents a genuine investment in human development. It noted that collaboration with the Ministry of Education constitutes a crucial step toward making reading a firmly established practice in the lives of Kuwaiti students, both inside and outside school.
