Official preliminary results released on Thursday showed that the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) won the largest number of seats in the Moroccan parliamentary elections, followed by its coalition partners in the outgoing government, the National Rally of Independents (RNI) and the Independence Party (PI).

The results of the elections held on Wednesday, decided by a narrow margin, will shape the profile of the upcoming coalition government, which will oversee the final stages of a $20 billion plan in preparation for hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup finals.

The new government will also oversee initiatives aimed at reducing social disparities and containing public discontent among youth, which manifested in a mass attempt to cross into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta and in protests led by Generation Z that resulted in deaths last year.

Interior Minister Abdouatif Lahlou said at a press conference on Thursday that the centrist-liberal Authenticity and Modernity Party secured 97 seats in the 395-member parliament, ahead of the National Rally of Independents, which won 66 seats, and the Independence Party, which obtained 65 seats.

In contrast, the Islamist Justice and Development Party (PJD) significantly strengthened its presence, winning 54 seats compared to just 13 in the previous elections, benefiting from the return of former Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane to the forefront.

Official data showed that voter turnout was 38.02 percent, down from 50 percent in the 2021 elections. The number of Morghans of voting age is approximately 27 million, but only 15.8 million are registered on the electoral rolls, a decrease of nearly 12 percent compared to the 2021 elections. Turnout is an important indicator for measuring citizen participation and trust in elected institutions.

The Authenticity and Modernity Party campaigned on a $37 billion program, pledging to create one million new jobs and continue investing in healthcare and social protection, alongside improving wages.
