A U.S. federal judge ordered the White House to immediately reinstate press access for CNN, MSNBC, and Politico to the presidential residence, after Donald Trump had barred them, according to a ruling issued overnight Wednesday-Thursday and reviewed by Agence France-Presse.

In response, CNN, MSNBC, and Politico filed a joint lawsuit seeking a temporary injunction against the enforcement of the order, citing the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees freedom of the press.

Judge Timothy Kelly determined that revoking the press credentials of these three media outlets without prior notice “likely violated their constitutional rights,” according to the ruling.

Kelly wrote that the “general rule” requires that affected parties be given “prior notice” and “an opportunity to be heard before the government proceeds” to deprive them of a constitutional right.

Trump, the billionaire and former reality television star, is known for his repeated attacks on media outlets that do not support his campaigns and criticize his administration’s policies, labeling them as “enemies of the people.”

This new ban comes as the Republican president faces significant political challenges ahead of the U.S. congressional midterm elections on November 3.

Public dissatisfaction with Donald Trump is growing amid rising living costs in the United States and sharp increases in fuel prices, against the backdrop of the ongoing war in the Middle East, whose outcomes have become more uncertain than ever.
