Green Team Edges Blue Team in Narrow Victory

Saudi Arabia secured a narrow 1-0 victory over an impressive Kuwait side in a match held today at King Abdullah Sports City’s Inma Stadium, which opened the 27th Arabian Gulf Cup.

Kuwait deployed a 4-3-3 formation, shifting to a 4-5-1 defensive shape to stifle Saudi attacks early.

Saudi Arabia controlled the tempo from the outset. Abdullah Al-Hamdan nearly opened the scoring in the second minute after breaking clear, but inexplicably shot wide. In the seventh minute, Mohammed Al-Shammari’s powerful strike flew over the crossbar.

Kuwait responded with a ninth-minute attack led by Mohammed Dhaman, who passed to Shabib Al-Khalidi. Al-Khalidi then laid it off to Aaid Al-Rashidi, but the Saudi defense cleared the ball before Al-Rashidi could shoot.

In the 12th minute, Nasser Al-Dosari unleashed a surprise shot that was brilliantly parried by Saudi goalkeeper Saud Al-Hushan. Aaid Al-Rashidi then tested the Saudi goal in the 15th minute, sending the ball just wide of the right post.

Saudi Arabia capitalized on a passing error by Abdulaziz Naji inside the penalty area in the 24th minute, regaining possession, but Khalid Al-Murshid intervened at the right moment to clear the danger.

Kuwait pressed again, with Nasser Falah delivering a pass in the 33rd minute, but the Saudi defenders shone, clearing the ball away from Shabib Al-Khalidi just in time.

In the 37th minute, Portuguese referee Joao correctly disallowed a goal by Mohammed Al-Shammari after Maaz Al-Asim was clearly pulled by Mohammed Kano.

From an organized counter-attack in the 44th minute, Shabib Al-Khalidi passed to Aaid Al-Rashidi, who set it up for Mohammed Dhaman. Dhaman’s shot hit Saudi goalkeeper Nawaf Al-Aqidi, but the ball went wide of the left post.

Relative calm settled in during the final minutes of a first half that ended goalless.

The second half began with a similar pattern: an early Saudi offensive push met with a solid defensive display from Kuwait’s “Blue” squad, who fought tenaciously alongside Al-Hushan to protect their goal.

The first significant attack of the second half came in the 50th minute, when Hamam Al-Hamami headed in a precise cross, but Saud Al-Hushan produced a superb save to deny the goal.

Kuwait’s coach, Souza, made a substitution in the 54th minute, bringing on Yousef Majid for Aaid Al-Rashidi. As Saudi pressure mounted, Kuwait defended with eight players, and Saleh Al-Shammari’s shot flew high over the bar.

Saudi Arabia missed a clear chance in the 59th minute after a one-two between Abdullah Al-Hamdan and Mohammed Al-Shammari. Al-Shammari’s shot was denied by the outstanding Yousef Al-Haqan, who cleared it for a corner.

Saudi persistence finally paid off in the 72nd minute when Hamam Al-Hamami’s shot was parried by Yousef Al-Haqan, who inadvertently pushed the ball into his own net.

Following the goal, Kuwait launched a fierce attack. From a cross, Khalid Al-Murshid rose for a powerful header that struck Nawaf Al-Aqidi and deflected for a corner instead of finding the net.

The incident led to Al-Aqidi’s substitution after he collided with a teammate and sustained an injury that forced him off the pitch.

The remaining minutes offered no further changes, leaving Kuwait with a 1-0 defeat. Nevertheless, the team earned respect and admiration for the fighting spirit displayed by its players throughout the match.

• Eid Al-Rashidi appeared for the first time wearing the Kuwaiti national team captain’s armband at the opening match of “Gulf Cup 27,” a historic moment in his career. Kuwaiti fans also raised a banner reading “The joy is one,” expressing the festive atmosphere surrounding the tournament’s opening.
