Al-Faleh: Sustainability is a fundamental component of national readiness and risk management capacity

State Minister for Development and Sustainability Affairs, Dr. Reem Al-Faleh, stated that recent regional developments have demonstrated that sustainability is no longer solely linked to environmental protection and resource conservation, but has become a fundamental component of national readiness and the capacity to manage risks and ensure the continuity of vital sectors under various circumstances.

Al-Faleh added, in her address during a workshop organized by the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) on crisis management and system integration, under the patronage of Oil Minister Tariq Al-Rumi, that the Council of Ministers tasked the Ministry of Development and Sustainability, in coordination with relevant government entities, with monitoring the level of national readiness to address potential environmental risks. She explained that the Ministry has worked on preparing the National Environmental Risk Register, identifying eight major risks and their response pathways, with the aim of building a clear national picture of risks, defining responsibilities, and measuring the level of readiness to manage them.

For his part, KPC Chief Executive Sheikh Nawaf Al-Saud stated that environmental sustainability is an integral part of the oil sector’s responsibility, emphasizing the Corporation’s commitment to supporting the state’s efforts in addressing potential environmental pollution risks, particularly those related to the oil sector’s operations.

Al-Saud added that the axes related to the oil sector’s operations include enhancing the speed of reporting environmental incidents, continuously updating emergency plans, and leveraging modern technologies in monitoring and tracking activities to build a more effective national system for responding to risks and protecting people, the environment, and vital facilities.
