Trump reveals "productive" meeting between US and Iranian officials in New York
US President Donald Trump announced that "very fruitful" talks took place on Tuesday between Iranian and American officials on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York, hours after he threatened to destroy the Islamic Republic if no agreement was reached.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, conveying Tehran's conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian media reports.
Iran's state broadcaster, IRIB, quoted Araghchi as telling Witkoff that Tehran's demands include "the immediate lifting of the US naval blockade, the prompt release of all frozen Iranian assets, and the end of the war on all fronts of the resistance."
This came after Trump delivered a speech before the General Assembly, focusing particularly on the ongoing war with Iran.
Trump indicated that the meeting lasted approximately three hours, describing it as "very good and very fruitful," while confirming that further talks are scheduled for "the very near future."
Trump's announcement of the resumption of dialogue with Tehran came during a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, who was present alongside Donald Trump, said he felt "great optimism" about the talks.
Also present in the room was the President's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, who had also participated in negotiations with Tehran before they were suspended in June.
Earlier, during his address to the United Nations, Donald Trump stated that there are two options: either "destroying" Iran or reaching an agreement, expecting a diplomatic solution after the US midterm elections scheduled for November.
The state broadcaster noted that the Iranian demands include "the immediate lifting of the US naval blockade, the rapid release of all frozen Iranian assets, and the end of the war on all fronts of the resistance."
