United States, Denmark, and Greenland sign agreement to enhance security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic

The signing of the agreement on Tuesday took place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York, days after President Trump announced the deal, which aims to strengthen the U.S. military presence in the vast, ice-covered island while keeping it under Danish control. The governments provided few details about the agreement before its signing.

For months, Trump had expressed his desire for Greenland to become part of the United States and issued threats to seize the island, which enjoys semi-autonomous status from Denmark, a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) ally.
