North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw a test of a “new type” of weapons system, affirming that the exercise reflected the country’s continuous advancement in military capabilities, according to state media on Tuesday.
The announcement came two days after South Korea and Japan declared that Pyongyang had launched two short-range ballistic missiles toward waters off its eastern coast, an act both countries condemned as a threat to regional security and stability.
Pyongyang did not disclose the nature of the new weapons system, but the state news agency quoted Kim praising the test and describing it as “a prominent demonstration of highly advanced defensive technology.”
It added that Kim warned such capabilities would inflict an “incurable headache and a harsh, inevitable blow” on his country’s adversaries.
