Qatari Prime Minister: Gulf States Must Work to Restore Stability in the Region

Qatar’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, said that Gulf states must work together to restore stability in the region and help find a settlement between the United States and Iran.

Speaking at the Qatar Economic Forum in New York on Sunday, Al Thani said, “We hope this war serves as a wake-up call for everyone. We must work together responsibly as a region.”

Bloomberg News quoted the prime minister as saying that messages are being exchanged between the United States and Iran. Qatar, which, like its Gulf neighbors, has been targeted by Iranian missile attacks, has been one of the key mediators in the conflict.

Gulf leaders aim to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump this week on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings, as the United States seeks a resolution to the conflict with Iran that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz to energy exports.

Trump told Fox News Sunday that there is a possibility of openness following his meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who is expected to visit New York this week to attend the UN General Assembly meetings.

In an interview with Bloomberg’s Michelle Husein, Al Thani said that Gulf states need to act responsibly to stop saboteurs and quell agitators. He added that ending the conflict between the United States and Iran would require more peacemakers.

The Qatari prime minister’s remarks came a day after Saudi Arabia issued warnings of air raids on Riyadh, the first such alerts in the capital since the peak of the U.S.-Iranian war in March and April.
