Autonomous Cessna aircraft inaugurates a new era with a flight across America

Joe Benbeet, founder and CEO of Joby Aviation, stated that the success of this flight ushers in a new era in the future of aviation.

The company oversaw the aircraft’s takeoff from its headquarters in Concord, California, on September 7, as it flew approximately 3,199 miles across the country without any human assistance at any stage.

In contrast, the Cessna’s flight path was programmed autonomously for every phase of the experiment, from ground preparation to takeoff and landing, according to Popular Science magazine.

The flight was not direct; the autonomous aircraft made several stops at Alliance Airport in Fort Worth, Texas, and at Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina.

After breaking the endurance and altitude records on September 14, the autonomous aircraft performed a symbolic flight over the monument in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, near the site where Orville and Wilbur Wright achieved their historic aviation milestone in 1903.

With this latest achievement in autonomous aviation, Joby has inaugurated a new era in the field of flight.

Beveert expressed his belief that autonomous aviation will connect remote areas, ensure the delivery of essential supplies, respond more rapidly to disasters, and even assist in military operations while keeping human personnel out of harm’s way.

The advancements brought by autonomous aviation are not limited to these fields; they will transform the nature of air transport.

It is worth noting that in April, Joby’s air taxi, the “Jetson,” completed its first test flight in New York City, covering the distance from John F. Kennedy Airport to Midtown in just 15 minutes.
